About MakerClassesIRL
My name is Tim, and I'm on a mission to help people choose creation over consumption.
I'm a parent. And like all parents, my wife and I spend a significant amount of time thinking about what we want (and don’t want) for our kids. We want them to have opportunities to learn and grow, to be physically and mentally healthy, and to develop deep, meaningful relationships. Which is pretty much what all parents WANT for their kids, right??!The problem is that our consumption and image obsessed culture is making it harder and harder for kids and teens to thrive. Reports from the NYT and The Atlantic have highlighted the issues of worsening mental health among American teens, and the stories are becoming all too familiar. Stuck alone on their phones, our kids are all at risk.MakerClassesIRL is our small effort to try to combat this mental health crisis. We want to make it so easy for you to find places where you and your kids can:Spend time creating instead of consuming.
Build In-Real-Life friendships around a shared hobby or project.
Learn from amazing teachers and mentors.
Experience the joy of accomplishing something hard, even when failure happens along the way.Our hope is that by making it easy for eager students to find classes we can also help the teachers and makerspace owners that believe in the value of making as much as we do. More demand in the ecosystem will lead to more (and better) supply. So go find a class and join us as we help fuel the maker revolution!
